PARKERSBURG -- The Interfaith Good Friday Stations of the Cross Walk will be held Friday, March 29, beginning at noon at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 532 Market St.
All are invited to attend. Those unable to walk church to church are invited to stay at St. Francis Xavier where all 14 stations are prayed.
The Stations of the Cross depict and pay homage to the 14 significant scenes from Jesus' walk to Calvary where Christ was crucified and died. At each church the program includes scripture readings, participant responses, and meditations. The stations are especially significant during Lent and on Good Friday, which marks the death of Jesus, but are prayed at other times through the year, as well.
After the stations are prayed at each church, a cross is taken from the altar and carried to the next church by someone who comes forth from the group. Many enjoy the annual opportunity to worship with those of different faith communities.
Some especially like the outward sign of faith the event provides to passersby in the community.
Churches participating represent a number of faith traditions including Roman Catholic, Anglican, United Methodist, Baptist, Episcopal, the Universal Christian Church, and others.
These downtown faith communities have long served the Parkersburg community through various volunteer ministries, as well as lending their spaces to various fellowships and self-help groups.
