Water main break shuts down Marietta High School

Marietta High School was closed Friday due to a water main break on the Colegate Avenue side of the building, according to school and city officials.
The closure was announced via Facebook post Thursday evening. The post said the closure affected only Marietta High School and all other schools were open as usual.
City of Marietta Water Superintendent Steve Eddy said the break happened around 7 or 8 p.m. Thursday. It was located in the incoming pipeline to the school and was caused by "normal wear and tear of pipes."
Eddy said as of 2 p.m. Friday, the break was repaired and crews were in the process of restoring water service to the building.
According to a district press release Friday afternoon, crews needed to remove and replace 10 inches of pipe, since the old one had a hole the size of a dollar bill with cracks spreading in multiple directions.
Once the new pipe was installed, crews refilled the ditch and slowly increased water pressure in the lines until they reached full function.
Superintendent Brad Silvus said the high school would reopen Monday for classes.
