PARKERSBURG - The 11th annual Give Local MOV campaign will kick off Tuesday, May 7, and culminate with a 24-hour online giving day, the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation announced.
The fundraiser connects community members with community nonprofits to raise money and awareness for local causes, according to a press release from the PACF.
The event started as part of a coordinated effort nationwide to connect donors with non-profits with a specific day of giving in May. Over the years, there has been more attention given at the local level.
"Many communities are still hosting a giving day on the first Tuesday in May," said Julie Posey, Senior Development and Stewardship Officer with the Parkersburg Area Community Foundation & Regional Affiliates.
"We saw there was a need for organizations and individuals to become comfortable with online giving and online communications with our non-profits in the area," Posey added.
May and June were also times when donations to nonprofits were down.
"We thought this would be a good time for some income to come in for our non-profit community at a time when things are a little bit slower in regards to donations," Posey said. "It will hopefully connect individuals in our community with a number of great non-profits that they then have the rest of the calendar year to get involved with, whether it is volunteering, seeing if there are openings on their boards, seeing what they are working on and advocating for them."
There was a continued need locally to continue to do the Give Local Day as many of the area non-profits still find it valuable for them, she said.
Last year, Give Local MOV raised more than $528,000 for 63 local programs, causes, and organizations with missions supporting animals, arts and culture, community improvement, education, environment, health, human service, youth development, and more.
Matching funds and prizes are what makes the campaign even more exciting. This year, with the generous help from Superior Toyota in Parkersburg, the PACF has $180,000+ available in matching funds and prizes to spark local giving and raise awareness for 65 area organizations, the Foundation reported.
This year, there will be 67 non-profit groups involved.
It is beneficial when non-profits can work together, Posey said.
"We are always finding there are problems solved and solutions found when our non-profits work together," she said.
Supporting non-profits in the area also extends to supporting many local businesses as they too support many causes in and around the community.
"To give local, you also have to buy local," Posey said.
"This support is made possible by our Superior team and our customers," said T.R. Hathaway, the owner of Superior Toyota, in the press release. "If the community didn't support us, we wouldn't be able to provide this type of funding for our community.
"We are thankful for our community and want to give back. Give Local MOV is an excellent way to do just that in our region."
People can give through the Foundation's secure online portal GiveLocalMOV.org. A number of prizes (additional money) is being presented to different groups who raise donations within a certain time frame and so on. There will also be opportunities to have donations matched through the Stretch Pool matching funds.
If a donor wants to contribute by check, please mail checks to PACF, PO Box 1762, Parkersburg, WV 26102-1762.
Checks are to be made payable to the PACF with "Give Local MOV - (agency name)" on the memo line.
If the check is to support multiple agencies, please include a list of the agencies with donation amounts on a separate piece of paper.
Officials recommend giving online, but understand if some people still want to give by check.
