Police have identified the man whose body was found along the west bank of the Muskingum River this week but are waiting to release the name to make sure family members have been notified first.
"He is not a local resident," Marietta Police Capt. Ryan Huffman said Thursday.
The body was discovered Tuesday evening by a Marietta College crew coach on the river bank off Gilman Avenue, between the Washington Street Bridge and the college boathouse.
Police received information Wednesday morning giving them a "pretty good idea of who he might be," Huffman said.
The body had been taken to the Montgomery County Coroner's Office for an autopsy, and they were able to identify the individual via fingerprints, he said.
Huffman declined to go into specifics about how the man died at this time but reiterated that foul play is not suspected.
"It appears from the scene to be an accident," he said.
