Sewah Studios in Marietta and TC Consulting LLC are working to raise awareness about National Historic Marker Day on the last Friday in April, April 26.

Sewah is the nation's largest and oldest historical marker manufacturer. There are many historical markers in the region, many of them along roadsides where they collect a lot of dust and debris.

Spring cleaning historical markers is an important preparation for summer travel and tourism. Not only is cleaning markers a good thing for the longevity of the markers but it is a great way to get outdoors and can incorporate everyone.

After selecting a marker to clean, make sure permission to work on it is obtained. Be mindful of traffic and parking regulations. Supplies should include soap, water, bucket, cloth rags, sponge, non-metal scrub bush, toothbrush, portable spray washer, gloves, protective eye gear, step ladder, grass clippers, trash bags and rakes.

Begin by removing larger debris and residue. Follow that with an initial rinse using just water. If needed, go ahead and set up a step ladder. Prepare a mild mixture of soap and water. Wet a non-metal scrub brush with the soapy mix and begin gently cleaning one side of the marker. Start at the top and work down to the marker base. Consider using a soft toothbrush for detailed cleaning around raised lettering, logos and trim.

Once the marker is lathered with the soapy mix, it's time to rinse. Use a portable water sprayer (if available) or bucket of clean water and a sponge. Repeat the cleaning process on the marker's pole or post.

Lastly, trim any tall grass or weeds around the base of the pole. Rake leaves and remove any fallen branches and/or sticks. If the marker is set in landscaping, possibly spread down new mulch or edge the bed.
