Marietta City Schools voted to accept resignations of high school principal Chad Rinard and assistant principal Katie Cronin during its monthly meeting Monday evening.
Rinard and Cronin's resignations will be effective July 31. The board voted to accept the resignations without discussion.
At the beginning of the meeting, Fort Harmar Heritage Group, a local historic group, unveiled a blueprint for a potential park on the property of the former Harmar Elementary School. Architect Derek Buell presented concept drawings full of greenery, walkways, and tiebacks to the site's history.
Group member Tom Fenton said he understands that the district has its own process to work through regarding the fate of Harmar Elementary,
"It doesn't address and and can't really address what is the process by which the school might dispose of it and it ends up like this or what the realities or the goals of the school system are," he said.
Board President Sam Tuten said he was concerned about the age of the ground underneath the school.
"It's an old piece of ground. So you know, we're trying to figure out what that means and that process. What options that gives us so we can make a decision on a collective as a group," he said.
Tuten added that he appreciated the time and effort Fort Harmar Heritage Group put into the presentation.
"It's not an official answer at this moment. It's a fantastic idea and I appreciate the work they put into it. But we need to explore our options going forward and what that would look like," he said.
Fenton said Monday's presentation was to get the group's idea out to the public.
"We're softly describing our idea, to get it out there," he said.
Shelley Gorrell, chairperson of the Henry Fearing Museum, said the park could be a place of reflection.
"It would honor Fort Harmar," she said. "It's kind of a burial ground. When Harmar Elementary was built, human remains were found in the area from the fort."
Boardmember Cody Parman provided an update on bathroom renovations. He said Energy Optimizers quoted him $125,000 for one set.
He said the board may need to have a discussion going forward. The board was planning to use the remaining ESSER funds on bathroom renovations after the district roofing project is completed.
Treasurer Frank Antil said bidding on the roofing project can start on May 30. The board tentatively scheduled a special session at 4:30 p.m. that day to approve bids.
The board voted to go into executive session at 7:11 p.m. to consider employment of a public employee or official and to consider the sale of property at competitive bidding. Tuten said no action would be taken following the session.
