The Songwriter Series, with host and songwriter Moon Mullen, will welcome father and son songwriters Joe Wharff and Jack Wharff to the Lafayette Hotel at 8 p.m. Friday to benefit the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley.
The "Two Wharffs & a Moon" session is the sixth in the Songwriter Series held in the Gun Room at the hotel, 101 Front St. in Marietta.
"The Songwriter-in-the-Round is my favorite way of highlighting the craft of songwriting," Mullen said.
With each artist sharing a song and the story behind it, the audience gets to understand the process.
"All three of us have written songs about Marietta," Mullen said. "It will be a real back-home moment."
Joe Wharff, a Marietta native, graduated from Marietta High School in 1983. He resides in Richmond, Va., with his wife and three children. He has been playing music all his life and credits his musical interest and talent to his mother Carol Wharff, a long-time Marietta artist in theater and music.
Joe has led the Slack Family Bluegrass Band for more than 25 years. The band has played in Marietta numerous times, including the Ohio River Sternwheel Festival on three occasions. Joe is credited with the songwriting on the majority of the tunes on the band's four albums. His songwriting led to an invitation to the IBMA Music Awards in Lexington, Ky., and the band was crowned the Virginia State Bluegrass champs in 2017. His songs paint a picture of life in the mountains and valleys of Ohio, West Virginia, and Virginia.
Jack Wharff, is a 20-year-old artist, backed by his band, the Tobacco Flatts, from Richmond. Earlier this year, he and his band shared their work on social media, quickly racking up hundreds of thousands of views on TikTok and Reels and subsequently went viral. Since 2022, Wharff has released eclectic music that showcases his unique voice and songwriting.
