The Marietta Fire Department presented an award to Yousuf Algarhy, a lifeguard at Marietta Aquatic Center, for saving a 6-year-old boy's life on June 14.

According to Algarhy, the boy had hit his head earlier on the pirate ship and had to sit out of the pool to recover.

After the boy had recovered, he went back into the pool but went into an area where the water was too deep. Algarhy mentioned he heard the boy yell, and jumped into the pool.

Algarhy said he got to the boy right as his head went underwater.

"I blanked out for a little bit," said Algarhy. "It was kinda just instinct."

Algarhy said he talked to the boy until he was out of the water.

Fire Chief C. W. Durham said the boy did not need to go to the hospital thanks to Algarhy acting fast.

An ambulance was called for the boy, but, according to Durham, he sustained no serious injuries.

Durham mentioned that this award is "not often given," and is saved for when life saving measures are taken. Durham said only two have been given out so far this year.

"We're thankful to get to recognize him," Durham said. "He deserves the recognition."
