Williamstown man’s body found

WILLIAMSTOWN — The body of a man reported missing was recovered on Sunday near a construction zone south of Williamstown, according to the Williamstown Police Department.

Gary Sackett, 79, Williamstown, was reported missing Sunday and was likely confused, the police department said. Numerous agencies and residents searched the Williamstown area, police said.

Corbin Meadows of Williamstown contacted authorities after he found a pair of shoes in an area adjacent to the construction zone on West Virginia 14 near the River Town Grill, police said. Wood County Deputy Sheriff Sgt. T.K. Phillips and the police dog Drago with Williamstown Police Chief J.S. Graham searched the area where the shoes were found and contacted authorities.

They were led to Big Run creek below the construction of the bridge off W.Va. 14 where multiple agencies participated in the search. Sackett’s body was found with the assistance of sonar, cadaver dogs and divers, the police department said.

While the end outcome was not what was hoped for, the police department thanked participating agencies that included the sheriff’s office, the Williamstown Volunteer Fire Department, Little Hocking Fire and Rescue, K9 Search and Rescue Services of West Virginia, the West Virginia Division of Natural Resources, the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, the Marietta Fire Department Dive Team, St. Joseph’s Ambulance Service, the St. Marys Police Department, the Pleasants County Sheriff’s Office and Marshall County Emergency Services.

“Individually we would like to thank Sgt. Phillips and K-9 Drago, Stephanie Justice and K-9 Ready, Kayla Tossone and K9 Mercy, Nathan Justice and K-9 Charlie and Chas Carr and K-9 Theo as well as the countless Williamstown area volunteers that searched throughout the day,” the police department said in a Facebook post. “Prayers to the family.”
