Marietta City Schools seeking levy renewal May 6
The Marietta City School District is seeking the renewal of an existing 4.06-mill levy intended to fund the district’s everyday needs on the May 6 ballot.
“This was an emergency levy for Marietta City Schools that was approved first by voters in November 2010,” said the district’s Treasurer Frank Antill. “Every five years it has to be renewed.”
The renewal is not for new buildings but “helps pay for day-to-day functions within the district,” such as transportation, education and daily services, said Christian Hudspeth, communications coordinator for Marietta City Schools.
Approval of the levy will renew existing funding and prevent any severe budget cuts from the district.
“It’s $2.75 million dollars a year for the district, which is about 10 to 12% of our budget,” said Antill. “The majority of that levy is to conduct day-to-day operations for the school district.”
If the renewal levy doesn’t pass, there would have to be a reduction to the budget, he said.
There will be no additional taxes if it’s approved. The district would continue operating the way it has been with the current funding, officials said.
“About 75% of these funds are used for staffing employees to educate, provide services for students and other vital functions like busing,” said Hudspeth. “This renewal levy is a vital part of our funding stream for Marietta City Schools. We’re thankful that our voters have renewed this previously, and this district will continue to be a good steward of these funds moving forward.”
