Institute for Learning in Retirement adds nine classes to fall lineup

Nine new classes are in the fall lineup at the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Marietta College.

Classes are held at MC in Thomas Hall Room 124 and one is also available by Zoom. Unless otherwise noted, classes meet from 3-5 p.m. For more information and to register online, go to www.marietta.edu/ilr.

The classes are:

¯”The Trees Among Us,” the only eight-week course being offered this fall, will meet Mondays beginning Sept. 15. Instructor Nancy Dew, a plant biologist, will lead tree tours on the college campus. She advises participants to “come prepared to walk.”

¯”Our Constitution: Its Principles and Your Rights,” a four-week class meeting on Tuesdays beginning Sept. 16. Instructors Betsy Cook, a local educator, Jacki Ritchey, a “lifelong citizen advocate,” and Natalie Johnson will offer insights into the crafting of American government that will lead to a better understanding of how the founders intended the branches of government to function.

¯”Cold Cases, Serial Killers, Scams and Money Laundering,” beginning Sept. 17, the class will meet four consecutive Wednesdays. Law enforcement experts Jeff Sandy and Larry Mincks will lead participants to a better understanding of investigations from 1960 to the present.

¯”Grit, Guts, and Greatness: Walking with Women in History,” four-week class beginning Thursday, Sept. 18. Jann Adams, local historian and author, will help students gain a better understanding of how women have challenged traditional expectations by creating new expanded pathways for themselves.

¯”Unusual Travel Destinations and Planning Adventures Abroad” will meet on four Fridays beginning Sept. 19. Instructor Susan Blauvelt and guest speaker Joy Cowdery will help participants to step out of their comfort zone by exploring travel options to places off the beaten path in Europe, North Africa, Mexico, and Central America, along with Cuba, India and Port Marion.

A second set of four-week classes will begin on Oct. 14.

¯”Seeking the More Perfect Union: The Supreme Court and Developing the Meaning of the Constitution” will focus on Supreme Court decisions from 1789 to the present. Instructor Mitchell Krum, Ph.D. will lead participants in gaining insights into the powers that the Constitution grants to each branch of government.

¯”Exploring Energy Options” will meet on Wednesdays beginning Oct. 15. Author and educator Ben Ebenhack will help participants gain a better understanding of the controversy that swirls around energy sources, uses, and impacts, with particular emphasis on the issue of sustainability.

¯”The People in Between: Native Nations in the Ohio Country” will focus on inhabitants of the Ohio Country from the time of the Moundbuilders to the arrival of the Ohio Company in 1788. The course will meet on four Thursdays beginning Oct. 16. Instructor Scott Statler will lead students to a better understanding of the Native American peoples who were here before us.

¯”Everything You Wanted to Know About Wine (But Were Afraid to Ask)” will meet on Fridays beginning Oct. 17. Instructor M.J. Stewart is a grape farmer and sommelier and holds a WSET wine certification. The goal of the course is for students to be able to identify different wine regions of the world and start to identify their own personal wine tastes. The course requires an additional fee of $25 to cover the cost of wines for tasting and sampling.

The Institute for Learning in Retirement is a community-based organization of people who share a love of learning. At its heart is an academic program designed by its members to suit their interests and taught by knowledgeable instructors. All are welcome. The cost of courses ranges from $15 for a four-week course to $30 for an eight-week course.
