Downtown Marietta will host the annual Dachshund Derby on Saturday, Sept. 20, with an afternoon of races, contests, and community activities centered on the popular small breed.
The event, organized by Marietta Main Street, will run from noon to 5 p.m. and is expected to draw participants and spectators from across the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Festivities will begin with a parade walk at noon, starting at the Harmar Bridge entrance on Post Street and continuing to the gazebo at Muskingum Park. Organizers encourage owners to bring their dogs in costumes, though participation is not required.
Once the parade concludes, the races will take place on the Armory Lawn beginning at 1 p.m. According to organizers, five different race categories will be offered, divided by age to give dogs from young pups to senior dachshunds a chance to compete.
For those who prefer not to race, other contests will be held outside participating downtown businesses. Categories include longest dachshund, shortest legs, longest ears, oldest dachshund, and best costume. Winners in both the races and the contests will receive prizes.
Beyond the entertainment, the event also highlights a charitable cause. Donations will be collected for the Humane Society of the Ohio Valley, which provides shelter and care for animals in need. Event staff said contributions of any size will help the organization continue its work.
Vendors will also be set up near the race and contest areas, offering goods and services for both pets and their owners.
The Dachshund Derby is supported by several local sponsors, including Washington State College of Ohio, the Marietta Community Foundation, The Original Pizza Place, We Lov Pets, Peoples Bank, The Glass Press, Ohio Valley Veterinary Hospital, Lawn ‘n Order, Comfort Clips Mobile Grooming, and Cisler Tails Pets Care.
Registration for the event closed Sept. 13.
