The American Red Cross of the Ohio River Valley will distribute smoke alarms from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Nov. 1 in Washington County through its Sound the Alarm, Save a Life initiative.

The Red Cross is partnering with local fire departments and other volunteer groups to install free smoke alarms for residents of Washington and Monroe counties, said Sharon Kesselring, executive director of the Ohio River Valley chapter. Working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death from home fires in half.
