BELPRE — Classes were set to resume today at Belpre Elementary School after multiple leaks caused by heavy ice accumulation on the roof led to the building’s closure on Thursday.
“A licensed roofing contractor conducted a thorough inspection and has confirmed that while the roof structure remains sound and safe, minor leaks may still occur in isolated areas until the remaining ice melts or is removed,” a release from Belpre City Schools said. “We are confident that the building is safe for occupancy.”
A few classrooms that may be affected by leaks will be rearranged to relocate instruction as needed, the release said.
District custodial staff and maintenance teams have addressed areas affected by the leaks and precautions remain in place, the release said. Full repairs on the roof are planned to begin next week, weather permitting.
The district thanked the school community for its patience and understanding in the release.
“The safety of our students and staff is our top priority, and we took immediate action to assess the situation,” the release said.
