PARKERSBURG — Gas prices are on the rise as conflict in the Middle East heats up.
Nationwide, the national average for a gallon of gas has gone up by six cents over the past week to $2.99.
The recent U.S. and Israeli attacks on Iran are an important factor to consider as Iran is a key player in the oil market, and any disruption to its oil infrastructure is consequential, according to a release from auto club AAA.
The average price for gasoline across Northern West Virginia is two cents more this week at $2.856 per gallon, according to AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report.
In the same report for South Central Ohio, the price is lower this week at $2.789 per gallon.
However, prices had increased at some local gas stations on Monday afternoon and into Tuesday.
If the Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to open waters, is blocked, that could send a ripple effect throughout the world, even countries that don’t heavily rely on oil from the Middle East, according to the AAA East Central’s Gas Price Report.
“Oil is part of a global market which means when there’s a shortfall in one part of the world, it affects other parts too,” the report stated. “Also, refineries are beginning the process of producing summer-blend gasoline which contains pricier additives to help reduce evaporation during warmer months.
“Gas demand is also expected to increase next month as spring break season kicks off and more drivers take road trips. (Monday’s) national average is 12 cents more than a month ago but 10 cents less than a year ago.”
According to new data from the federal Energy Information Administration, gasoline demand decreased last week from 8.74 million barrels per day to 8.73 million. Total domestic gasoline supply decreased from 255.8 million barrels to 254.8 million. Gasoline production decreased last week, averaging 9.2 million barrels per day.
The average price of unleaded self-serve gasoline Monday in various areas in West Virginia was $2.670 in Parkersburg, $2.888 in Clarksburg, $2.777 in Wheeling and $2.980 in Morgantown. In Ohio, it was $2.831 in Marietta, $2.879 in Athens, $2.656 in Chillicothe, $2.809 in Gallipolis and $2.683 in Jackson. Prices in some parts of Wood and Washington counties exceeded those averages Tuesday.
