BELPRE – While most high school students are just beginning to figure out what they want to do with their futures, Belpre High School junior Jayden Snider is trying to decide which of his interests he will pursue.
He has taken, or will take, a variety of classes in health care, computers, engineering and industrial safety.
He and his friend Jayden Haynes run the Design Shop, a clothing and 3D printing store where they make Belpre merchandise and other items.
“All our proceeds either go back to the business or towards school-related projects,” he said. “We just got done with our project for kindergarten crowns, and we also worked on a couple of projects like a cell map for the biology room and a 3D print of a single-cell organism.”
Snider said they work on the project during their free class period.

“What we do is we come up with an idea, we try to see how much it will cost to make it, and then we see if there is interest in it,” he said. “We’ve been doing this since our freshman and sophomore years.
“We have a lot of fun doing this,” he said.
In addition to the shop, he is in two medical training programs at Belpre High School for what is called the Friday option. In addition, he is taking the usual high school courses.
“I’m a really big fan of science,” he said. “Science has been my favorite class for as long as I can remember. Biology was really fun for me last year, and then the forensics class this year, it has gone well this year.
“Right now, we are learning about teeth and lip prints and how they can help in solving crimes.”

Snider is also in a drone class and an engineering and design class.
He is leaning toward the health care field for his post-high school career choice.
“I think it is an interesting prospect, especially because my grandma was in it, my mom was in it and I’m really good with people,” he said. “Engineering and design are more about how to get a business running, if I chose to go with the option.”
Snider said he has earned his certification for phlebotomy technician and he is in a certified nursing assistant class. His classes for the health field are part of a joint program with the Washington County Career Center.
“Belpre and Warren have a deal with the Career Center, where students can go there on Fridays and take classes for one of their trades,” he said. “At Belpre, I’ve gotten my forklift certification (and) my Manufacturing Skills Standards Council (MSSC) safety certification.”

This year he is working on the rest of the MSSC to get the production technician certification.
“That will take this year and next year if I want to get all the credentials,” he said.
Jayden said manufacturing and design have been his secondary interests.
“Just in case the health care field does not work out because it is a rough field for a lot of people,” he said.
When he finishes his CNA training, he hopes to work at Belpre Landing, if he is accepted, on the weekends.

At Belpre High School, he will be taking part in the drone and battle bots competition.
“I’ve been involved since last year,” he said. “I’ve been in the drones class and we’ve been doing the drones competition. I really enjoy it; it was one of my favorite things to do last year.”
He said the competitions take place in April or May.
“We are also getting our FAA part 107, a certification to fly drones,” he said.
