Pedestrian fatality in Washington County

MARIETTA – A man walking on Ohio 821 in Salem Township late Friday night was struck by a car and killed, the Marietta Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.

Joseph Harriman, 27, of Lower Salem was walking north on Ohio 821 near milepost 7 where he was struck by a 2010 Ford Edge driven by Mitchell Carpenter, 24, of Lowell, the patrol said. Carpenter was driving north, the patrol said.

Harriman sustained fatal injuries, the patrol said.

The accident happened shortly before midnight and remains under investigation, the patrol said. The road was closed two-and-a-half hours, the patrol said.

Alcohol is considered to be a contributing factor in the crash, the patrol said.

The patrol was assisted at the scene by the Washington County Sheriff’s Office, Salem Township Volunteer Fire Department, Fearing Township Volunteer Fire Department and the Washington County Coroner’s Office.
