Flood watch issued for region

A flood watch issued Sunday afternoon for the region by the National Weather Service in Charleston will remain in effect until 2 a.m. Monday, Memorial Day.

Counties included are Athens, Washington and Meigs in Ohio and Jackson, Wood, Pleasants, Tyler, Lincoln, Roane, Wirt, Calhoun, Ritchie, Doddridge and Gilmer in West Virginia including the cities of Vienna, Elizabeth, St. Marys, Spencer, Stockport, Ripley, Sistersville, Paden City, Middlebourne, Pomeroy, Pennsboro, Glenville, Marietta, Parkersburg, Ravenswood, Gallipolis, Belpre, Harrisville and Grantsville, the service said.

Showers are expected to become numerous Sunday afternoon and persist into the evening with heavier downpours and evening thunderstorms, the weather service said. Rainfall of 1-2 inches is possible, the weather service said.

Excessive rainfall runoff may result in flooding of rivers creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations, creeks and streams may rise out of their banks and flooding may occur

in urban areas and areas of poor drainage, the weather service said.
