Marietta High School choir program receives honors, heads into spring concert season

The Marietta High School choir program earned top honors at both the Ohio Music Education Association State Large Group event and a Chicago Heritage Festival in Chicago.

On April 16, the choirs traveled to Chicago, where the Cantabile, Bass and Treble Choirs each earned Gold First Place honors at a national-level choral competition. In addition, both Cantabile and Bass Choirs received the Adjudicator’s Award for exceptional performance and quality. The Cantabile Choir was further recognized as the Overall Best Choir, the highest honor awarded at the event.

Honors awarded to the Marietta High School choir program:

• Cantabile Choir – Gold Rating, first place

• Bass Chorus – Gold Rating (only group)

• Treble Chorus – Gold Rating, first place

• Adjudicator’s Award for Cantabile Choir

• Adjudicator’s Award for Bass Chorus

• Best Overall Choir for Cantabile Choir

• Choral Sweepstakes Award

All three choirs received an invitation to the Festival of Gold at Carnegie Hall.

At this year’s OMEA State Large Group Event, all three Marietta High School choirs were also awarded with performance honors:

• Treble Chorus (Class B): Superior Rating, with two superior and one excellent rating on stage, and an excellent rating in sight-reading.

• Bass Chorus (Class B): Superior Rating, with two superior and one excellent rating on stage, and a superior rating in sight-reading.

• Cantabile Choir (Class A): Superior Rating, earning straight superior ratings on stage and in sight-reading.

This achievement marks the third consecutive year that all three choirs have received superior ratings at the state level.

All three choirs are under the direction of Scott Rieder, who leads multiple vocal ensembles including Mixed Choir, Vocal Point and Handbells.

The choirs will be performing at 7 p.m. May 14 in the Marietta High School auditorium for their Spring Show.
