PARKERSBURG – The West Virginia State Police said Monday that the man who died over the weekend after reportedly exchanging gunfire with Parkersburg and Wood County law enforcement is suspected of killing the woman whose body was found in their shared residence.

Miguel Angel Gallegos, 49, of 3408 25th St., Parkersburg, was identified by 1st Sgt. C.J. Weekley as the man accused of both firing on officers at the scene and of killing Evelyn Lassend, 45, of the same address.

Weekley said Lassend’s cause of death remains under investigation. Press releases from both the Parkersburg Police Department and Wood County Sheriff’s Office said investigators believe the second individual, Lassend, was dead before officers arrived.

The State Police are investigating because Gallegos died Saturday after sheriff’s deputies arrived on the scene and officers from both departments returned fire. One officer from each department has been placed on administrative duty while internal reviews are conducted.

Weekley said the State Police would not be identifying the officers at this time.

Wood County Sheriff Rick Woodyard said he was discussing with Parkersburg Police the appropriate time to release the officers’ names. Parkersburg Chief Matthew Board did not immediately return a call seeking comment Monday afternoon.

Parkersburg Police were dispatched to the residence at approximately 9:48 p.m. Saturday. Woodyard said the initial call involved some type of disturbance but it quickly escalated.
