Marietta Main Street’s July First Friday to celebrate public art and Independence Day
MARIETTA — Downtown Marietta will mark the Fourth of July weekend with art, music, shopping and live demonstrations during July First Friday.
The event, hosted by Marietta Main Street, will be from 5-9 p.m. Friday downtown. According to a release from Marietta Main Street, businesses will pay homage to America’s 250th birthday with red, white and blue decorations, while the Armory will serve as the center of activities for the Marietta Main Street Public Art Committee’s annual fundraiser.
Committee members will print T-shirts live at the Armory using JustaJar Design Press’ manual printing press. Designs were hand-carved by committee members and local artists, including Bobby Rosenstock, Amanda Detlor, Nate Shahan, Andy Hall and Sarah Arnold. Visitors can choose a design, color and size and have a shirt printed on site for $20.
“July First Friday is our primary fundraising effort each year,” said Arnold, committee co-chair. “The T-shirt printing has become a signature moment for our committee — not only because it’s fun and interactive, but because it directly supports the long-term vision of arts access and engagement downtown.”
The committee also will host its 6-by-6-inch art sale, featuring dozens of small artworks created and donated by local artists and community members. The pieces will sell for $20 each, with proceeds benefiting the Public Art Committee, which helps place temporary and permanent artwork throughout downtown Marietta.
The Armory festivities also will include live chalk art by Alaina Pellett, live music on the Armory lawn and an art installation on the Armory bus stop by Mallory Plesac. Waterview Pointe, Veritas Academy and the U.S. Marine Corps Recruitment Office also will be on the Armory lawn.
Several downtown businesses will take part in the evening with music, sales and activities. First City Records will feature new vinyl collections, sale bins and live music by Sophie Stevens. JustaJar Design Press will host live music outside the shop with “One Vote! The Musical.”
Peoples Bank Theatre will celebrate its 10th anniversary with what the release described as its largest First Friday concert to date, featuring free performances by The Rylee Bapst Band and Angela Perley. Three local food trucks also will be available.
Wit & Whimzy will host author Joy Held, who will sign copies of her new book, “Saving Marietta: Journey to Freedom.” The shop also will feature a limited collection of America 250 T-shirts and merchandise. Clutch Collective will host live music by Hannah and Levi Westfall.
Other participating businesses will offer sales and promotions, including Teri Ann’s, Emleigh’s, Mama B’s, Threadz Boutique, Two Peas in a Pod Florist, River City Spaces, Life Balance Healing, Downtown Bargains, J&M Books and Play, Dad’s Primitive Workbench, Schafer Leather Store and Dead People’s Stuff.
Over the Moon Pub & Pizza will feature live music from Crock and Cartmell from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Derailed Distillery will hold a product launch for Copperline Strawberry Vodka featuring Stacy Family Farm strawberries.
Downtown First Friday events are held from 5-9 p.m. on the first Friday of each month from February through December. Events include late shopping, artists, musicians, community organizations and activities tied to a monthly theme.
