US and Iran in dispute over whether Tehran has agreed to nuclear inspections
ISLAMABAD (AP) — The U.S. and Iran were in dispute over whether Tehran had agreed to allow U.N. inspections of its nuclear sites. As officials negotiated over how to permanently end the war in Iran, a separate plan emerged Tuesday to break the shipping bottleneck through the Strait of Hormuz. The disagreement over nuclear inspections came as Iran’s president met with Pakistani mediators and technical teams from the U.S. and Iran continued talks in Switzerland. A United Nations agency said a plan was underway to evacuate 11,000 stranded seafarers through the strait vital to global energy supplies and which Iran had blocked after the U.S. and Israel launched the war on Feb. 28.
Senate is set to vote again on a war powers resolution to halt the Iran conflict
WASHINGTON (AP) — For the 10th time, the Senate will vote on a war powers resolution to block U.S. military action against Iran. Tuesday’s vote comes as lawmakers warily watch President Donald Trump’s efforts to resolve the conflict. The outcome Tuesday is not expected to be much different from the previous Senate efforts, which have all failed. But a growing number of Republican lawmakers in both the House and Senate have expressed their concerns over both the war and the deal Trump struck with Iran to end it. It comes as the Pentagon is seeking $80 billion from Congress mostly for the Iran war as it backfills munitions and stockpiles.
Sharp drops in Big Tech companies pull stocks lower on Wall Street
NEW YORK (AP) — A sell-off in big technology companies spread from Asia back to the U.S., pulling stocks lower on Wall Street. The growing likelihood of interest rate hikes coming up this year has helped deflate a massive run-up in AI-related stocks in recent days as traders worry that the higher rates could hamper economic growth. The S&P 500 fell 1% Tuesday. The index is coming off 11 weekly gains out of the last 12, led largely by tech stocks. The Nasdaq fell 1.5%. Micron Technology slumped 11%. The Dow, which has less weighting in tech, held up better with a gain of 0.2%.
Mamdani and AI industry flex political power in New York, plus more to watch in Tuesday’s primaries
WASHINGTON (AP) — Two factions in the AI industry are clashing in a Democratic primary for a U.S. House seat. New York Assemblyman Alex Bores, a pro-regulation candidate, faces opposition from a group funded by OpenAI investors. The group spent over $7 million on ads against him. In response, groups partly backed by Anthropic spent $10 million to support Bores. The election will test the political influence of these AI factions and the viability of pro-regulation candidates. Meanwhile, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani is endorsing progressive candidates in Democratic primaries, challenging established contenders. These races will gauge Mamdani’s influence and the strength of democratic socialist platforms.
Supreme Court rules Rastafari man can’t sue Louisiana prison officials who cut his dreadlocks
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Supreme Court has barred a former Louisiana inmate from suing prison officials who cut his dreadlocks in violation of his Rastafari religious beliefs. The justices ruled Tuesday against Damon Landor, holding that a federal law designed to protect inmates’ religious rights does not permit lawsuits for money damages. The high court agreed with lower courts that had ruled the Religious Land Use and Institutionalized Persons Act can’t be used to hold those who violate inmates’ rights financially responsible. The justices declined to adopt the rationale from a 2020 decision that allowed Muslim men to sue over their inclusion on the FBI’s no-fly list under a sister statute.
Trump says 6 people have been arrested for damaging the Reflecting Pool
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says six people have been arrested for damaging the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool, which Trump recently ordered to be painted what he calls “American Flag Blue.” The president claimed without supporting evidence that there had been a “350 foot gash” in the paint as the administration faces a self-imposed deadline to fix a botched renovation before the nation’s 250th anniversary celebration next month. Trump’s social media post Tuesday said another seven people were cited for damaging the pool, saying “it was purposefully and criminally done.” The Associated Press verified that one man was arrested after touching the already-peeling paint as federal workers try to deal with an algae bloom in the water.
From peace talks to Pennsylvania: Trump visits Mack Truck facility
MACUNGIE, Pa. (AP) — President Donald Trump is visiting a battleground congressional district in swing state Pennsylvania to tour a Mack Truck facility. The president is seeking to cast attention on the U.S. economy in his first major public event beyond Washington since he signed the Iran war agreement. Trump’s visit on Tuesday to the Allentown-area business comes just about a week after he approved the initial deal to halt hostilities with Iran and as his negotiators work out the finer details. It’s the president’s fifth second-term visit to Pennsylvania, a key state whose support in 2016 and 2024 helped him to win the White House.
Savannah Guthrie says family remains ‘in agony’ over missing mom, begs the public for tips
TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) — “Today” show host Savannah Guthrie made an emotional appeal to viewers Tuesday. She pleaded with them to step forward with any information about her missing mother. Her plea came a day after news organizations said a ransom note months ago had indicated that she was dead. Eighty-four-year-old Nancy Guthrie was reported missing from her Arizona home on Feb. 1. Authorities believe she was taken against her will. Savannah Guthrie says her family “cannot be at peace” while her mother’s whereabouts are unknown. Authorities recently conducted a search near the Arizona-Mexico border but didn’t report finding her.
18-year-old suspect arrested in shooting that killed 2 inside Northern California library
Police investigating a shooting at a library in Northern California that left two people dead say an 18-year-old suspect has been arrested. Police say they responded to a 911 call Monday evening in which gunshots and people screaming could be heard coming from the Chico branch of the Butte County Library. The chief of police said the suspect fled out the back of the library as the officers entered, and that other law enforcement personnel took him into custody. Police have said they determined the man acted alone and that he doesn’t appear to have any connection to the victims.
Ronaldo becomes first player to score in six World Cups with two goals against Uzbekistan
HOUSTON (AP) — Cristiano Ronaldo became the first player to score in six different World Cup tournaments by getting two goals in Portugal’s match against Uzbekistan.
