Marietta City Schools Board of Education approved two faculty positions

MARIETTA – The Marietta City Schools Board of Education approved the hiring of two faculty members during their regular monthly meeting Monday.
Superintendent Mary Schaeffer said Alexis Coates has been appointed as the new Curriculum Coordinator to fill the vacant position. The position was originally titled Curriculum Director and was filled by Tim Fleming.
"We changed the title to Curriculum Coordinator because I wanted the position to be intentionally focused on instructional leadership," said Schaeffer in a detailed overview of Monday night's meeting. "My vision is for this individual to spend less time on administrative responsibilities and more time working directly alongside teachers and principals."
Coates will fill the role for the upcoming 2026-27 school year. Schaeffer said her experience as a teacher and with the district will be a "tremendous asset."
During the meeting, the board also approved for Shane Freshour to fill the position as District Testing Coordinator and Special Education Supervisor.
According to information provided by Schaeffer, the position oversees district testing and supports special education services.
"His experience using data to support student achievement and instructional decision making will be a valuable addition to our leadership team," said Schaeffer.
A portion of the meeting Monday included a presentation about the completion of the district-wide assessment.
Conducted by SHP, "an architectural and educational planning firm specializing in educational facilities," the analysis provided insight for the board on structural and educational improvements.
Schaeffer said the comprehensive analysis was the first step in a long process of determining district priorities.
"The assessment provides a detailed visual review of each facility, identities maintenance and capital needs, prioritizes projects based on urgency, and develops realistic cost estimates that account for inflation and long-term planning," said Schaeffer.
Schaeffer said after the presentation, the next steps will be to move forward with planning. The next phase will consist of forming committees, reviewing findings, and planning financially.
Schaeffer said she was excited for the upcoming school year and the future of the district.
The board will meet at 6 p.m. Aug. 24 at 111 Academy Dr., and is subject to change.
