MARIETTA -- Amid recent litigation, the Washington County Veterans Service Commission issued a statement in a press release Tuesday to restate its mission to the community.
Over recent months, there has been ongoing litigation and disagreements among members within and surrounding the organization.
Former Executive Director Darren Shearlock resigned from his position on June 11, which followed months of allegations, litigation, and complaints, according to the release.
In the release, the organization said it acknowledged the "confusion" and "concern" that could arise as a result of these recent events.
"The mission of the Veterans Service Office is to serve the veterans and families of Washington County," it read. "We remain focused on that purpose, and we will continue to prioritize the needs of those who have served."
According to the release, veterans who attended recent meetings had expressed their "support," and "frustration" with the circumstances. The commission wanted to remind the public about what it stood for as an organization.
"The Washington County Veterans Service Commission remains dedicated to its mission: ensuring that every veteran in Washington County receives the benefits, advocacy, and support they have earned," the release read. "While recent events have been challenging, they do not diminish our commitment to transparency, accountability, and service."
Questions from veterans and community members can be directed to the commission office at 706 Pike St., Marietta. Contact numbers and email addresses are available on the website at https://www.wcvsc.com/.
