VIENNA - Two people were hospitalized and two detained for questioning after a shooting Sunday night on Grand Central Avenue.
Vienna Police Chief Josh Cole said the incident arose out of an ongoing dispute between individuals known to each other and traveling in two vehicles on Grand Central.
"At some point, individuals in both vehicles began shooting (at) each other," Cole said.
A woman in one vehicle was struck in the head, and a male passenger in the same vehicle was also wounded, he said.
Two people were detained for questioning later in Washington County, Cole said, adding charges are pending. The case remains under investigation.
Washington County sheriff’s deputies stopped a vehicle on Third Street in Marietta based on the description provided and detained those inside, Sheriff Mark Warden said.
"We held them until Vienna Police Department could come over and do their interviews,” he said.
At least one of the individuals remains in custody.
The wounded individuals were both taken to WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center, with the woman later moved to WVU Medicine Ruby Memorial in Morgantown, Cole said.
"I want (to) extend my sincere appreciation to all the LEOs (law enforcement officers) and First Responders that reacted quickly to ensure the safety of our community and residents," Vienna Mayor Chad Emrick posted on Facebook late Sunday night.
After the initial call, scanner traffic indicated law enforcement was rerouting southbound traffic on Grand Central Avenue, near the former Popeyes, to go through the mall parking lot from the south entrance to the north entrance.
