MARIETTA - Nine new classes have been added to the Fall 2026 schedule at the Institute for Learning in Retirement at Marietta College.
Classes are held from 3-5 p.m. in Thomas Hall, Room 124, unless otherwise noted in the course description and many courses will be available by Zoom. For more course information and to register online, go to www.marietta.edu/ilr.
Cops, Convicts, and Coroners: A History of Organized Crime in the Mid-Ohio Valley will meet eight consecutive Mondays beginning Sept. 14. The course will be presented by Bob Newell, a law enforcement officer who retired from the Parkersburg Police Department with 25 years of service in various roles, including chief.
Participants can expect an in-depth look at some of the most significant criminal investigations in Mid-Ohio Valley history. Course fee is $35.
Barbara Hansen, Ph.D., will present John and Annie Glenn: A Love Story from Cradle to Grave. The class will meet on four consecutive Tuesdays beginning Sept. 8.
Hansen is a retired educator and is executive director of the Museum Association of East Muskingum, which oversees the John and Annie Glenn Museum and the National Road Zane Grey Museum.
The course will focus on the Glenns devotion to one another, commitment to community, loyalty to home and dedication to public service. The final session of the course on Sept. 29 will be at the John and Annie Glenn Museum in New Concord.
The fee for the course is $20, plus $10 museum admission.
Making "HERstory": The Women's Movement will meet on four Wednesdays starting on Sept. 9. Presenter Amanda Haney-Cech is an associate dean of student success and senior director of the Academic Resource Center at Marietta College.
Participants will explore the various waves of feminism, the social and political changes each inspired and the continuing challenges and opportunities facing women today.
The fee is $20.
The Art of Collections will meet on four Thursdays beginning Sept. 10. Presenter Suzanne Schultz, founder of Canvas Fine Arts, has extensive experience in the art world.
The course will explore how collections are developed, curated, valued and preserved and will conclude by examining the personal relationship collectors have with art and the lasting legacy collections leave.
The fee for the course is $20.
Wine 201: Everything You Wanted to Know About White Wine but Were Afraid to Ask will meet on four consecutive Fridays beginning Sept. 11. M.J. Stewart, presenter, co-owns a vineyard in western Ohio and is a certified sommelier.
Participants will expand their appreciation of white wines by exploring familiar favorites alongside lesser-known varietal wines. The fee for the course is $20, plus an additional $30 for those who choose to participate in tasting wines.
No partner will be needed for No More Being a Wall Flower: Line Dancing for Everyone. The course will be held Oct. 13-Nov. 3 at the Gathering Place at Marietta College.
Presenter Anita Lockhart is a long-time line dance instructor and volunteer and has experience in dancing and dance-related activities. The course offers an opportunity to learn the most popular line dances at a comfortable pace while enjoying music, getting light exercise and sharing laughter.
Lockhart recommends participants "bring comfortable shoes and willingness to have fun." The fee for the course is $20.
Hidden Flights and Secret Missions of the Cold War will meet on four Thursdays beginning Oct. 14. Mike Hushion, a retired 30-year Air Force veteran, will go beyond the history books to examine previously classified reconnaissance operations during the Cold War.
Participants will gain a perspective on the risks, technology and strategy involved with these secret operations. Course fee is $20.
Ginny Guthrie Caplinger, M.S., owner of Log Cabin Country Quilts, will present A Stitch in Time: The History of Quilting Traditions on four consecutive Thursdays beginning Oct. 15. Caplinger will lead participants in exploring the history of quilting, from its early traditions through modern times.
Each session will examine how quilts reflected the needs, styles, fabrics and social history of their eras. The fee for the course is $20.
Ctrl + Alt + Conquer: Taking Control of Your Digital World will be offered in four sessions beginning Friday, Oct. 16. Marilyn Wenzel, former technology professional with the Marietta City Schools and Marietta College, will help participants improve their technology skills without getting overwhelmed.
Course topics will include recent operating systems, browser updates, password security, AI basics and scam prevention, among others. Participants are encouraged to bring their own devices, questions and tech concerns for discussion.
The fee for the course is $20.
