BELPRE - A gas leak is rerouting traffic Thursday in Belpre, after it was reported in front of the Belpre Church of Christ, a dispatcher at the Belpre Police Department said.

Fire crews and representatives of Enbridge Gas have been on the scene since 9:30 a.m., the dispatcher said.

The Belpre Volunteer Fire Department posted on its Facebook page that State Route 618 was closed from Drag Strip Road to the Redwood Restaurant, and is urging people to use alternative routes to avoid the area.

"If you live in the Circle Drive area, or down the Beach Drive area, please enter from the Redwood area. The fire department will advise you how to get to your residence."

If people do not live in that area, they are being asked to stay clear, the post said.

The dispatcher said crews have been in touch with school officials about how bus drop-offs will be handled.

At 1:15 p.m., the dispatcher said he was informed by crews on the scene that they expected to be on the scene for a couple more hours.

The Belpre Police Department is expected to alert residents via social media when the road is reopened.
