Teen of the Week: WCCC senior studies for LPN certification

By Sophie Wheeler 2 min read

WATERFORD – Emma Schaad, 17, is the daughter of Greg and Alisha Schaad from Waterford and a rising senior at Waterford High School and the Washington County Career Center in the Pre-Nursing program, where she was selected to take part in the adult licensed practical nursing classes starting this fall.

"There's the five of us that will take classes with 25 adults" she said. "I was really excited when I learned that I'd get the opportunity to take the course.".

Schaad will be studying toward her LPN license and after graduation will take the test for the certification. Schaad said the teachers are what brought her to the Pre-Nursing program at Washington County Career Center.

"I had always wanted to go into nursing, but I liked the teachers the most." she said.

Schaad spent her summer volunteering at Marietta Memorial Hospital as part of the Summer Youth Program, where students complete 60 volunteer hours to gain meaningful experience in healthcare. Schaad spent this time in fourth floor surgery at Marietta Memorial and the oncology department at the Belpre Medical Campus.

In her free time, Schaad runs cross country for Waterford High School, is a member of 4-H and took part in SkillsUSA last spring.

"I've been doing cross country since seventh grade," she said "I just like staying active. I spend my time running and lifting.".

Schaad has been participating in 4-H since third grade. She said she enjoys being around and showing animals. Last year, she even won champion for the senior division of showmanship at the Washington County Fair for goats. She raises pigs, goats and cows.

While participating in SkillsUSA, her team competed in a Jeopardy-style tournament called the Health Knowledge Bowl that tests the teams collective knowledge within the healthcare system. While this was Schaad’s first time participating, her team achieved first in their region and fourth at the state competition.

After graduation, Schaad plans to attend the University of Cincinnati to obtain her bachelor of science in nursing.
