PARKERSBURG – A Jackson County company has been recognized for one of the five coolest things made in the state by the West Virginia Manufacturers Association.
Constellium of Ravenswood makes high-performance aluminum alloys used in the launch vehicle and spacecraft flown by astronauts in the Artemis program that will take the United States back to the moon, perhaps by the end of the decade.
The Manufacturers Association on Monday announced the results of its first Coolest Thing Made in West Virginia Contest. From 3,200 votes, the top 5 were Constellium and:
Silas Young, 13, Appalachian Critter Co. of Sutton, who uses 3D printers to make articulated animals, creatures and other products he sells at fairs and festivals in West Virginia.
Warwood Tool Co. of Wheeling that was founded in 1854 and makes tools for the coal, oil and gas, railway maintenance, construction and gardening industries.
Mountain Table, a small-batch roaster from Renick, and its Bourbon Barrel Infused Coffee.
Never Deer, Charleston, for professional-grade deer repellents for a broader market.
From the towering Core Stage of the SLS to adapters, protective structures, and the Orion Crew Module itself, Constellium aluminum is integrated into major structural elements of both the launch vehicle and the crewed spacecraft. These components must perform through extraordinary challenges: the violent forces of liftoff, extreme temperature swings in space, and intense mechanical and thermal loads during re‑entry.
The winner of the contest will be announced on Oct. 2, National Manufacturing Day, at Blue Ridge Community and Technical College at Martinsburg.
"We want to thank everyone who cast a vote for their favorite product made here at home," Bill Bissett, president of the association, said. "I think these top 5 products show the diversity of manufacturing in the Mountain State and it will be interesting to see who comes in first place."
