BELLEVILLE - A Point Pleasant man was hospitalized after his vehicle was struck by a train Friday morning.
According to a release from the Wood County Sheriff's Office, deputies, firefighters and emergency medical personnel were dispatched just after 9 a.m. Friday to a railroad crossing at Harris Highway and Belleville Drive.
A 2019 Kia Sorento operated by Gregory Grimm, 61, of Point Pleasant, was halfway across the tracks when the vehicle was struck by a southbound CSX train, the release said.
The train came to a stop approximately one-quarter of a mile away from the crossing, the release said. The vehicle was not visible from the crossing.
Emergency medical personnel from WVU Medicine Camden Clark Ambulance service and the Lubeck and Pond Creek volunteer fire departments responded to the scene and brought Grimm to an ambulance using a UTV and trailer. The ambulance drove him to a nearby field where a medical helicopter had landed. He was then flown to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment.
Grimm's condition was not available Friday afternoon.
The vehicle was eventually removed from the scene by Pifer's Towing.
The crossing was marked by signs in both directions. There appeared to be no gate or flashing lights in place.
Grimm was the only occupant of the vehicle. The release did not mention any personnel on the train. A message to CSX was not immediately returned Friday afternoon.
The incident remains under investigation, according to the sheriff's release, which was posted to the office's Facebook page.
