MARIETTA - Four Washington County students are among more than 330 students receiving postsecondary scholarships from the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio and its affiliate foundation partners.
The foundation awarded more than $870,000 through over 670 donor-established scholarships to students in 25 counties across Appalachian Ohio.
Three Washington County students received the Jennifer Garrison Public Service Scholarship, which is awarded to students from Monroe, Noble and Washington counties who have a passion for public service and have held an elected position in their school's student government.
The recipients are Parker Burris of Whipple, a 2026 Fort Frye High School graduate who plans to attend Syracuse University; Cassidy McCarthy of Marietta, a 2026 Warren High School graduate who plans to attend Ohio State University; and Sydney Starcher of Belpre, a 2026 Warren High School graduate who plans to attend Marshall University.
Phineas McDole of Belpre received the Bob Evans and Wayne White Legacy Scholarship. The scholarship honors Evans and White and their commitment to the Appalachian Ohio region.
McDole is a 2026 graduate of Warren High School and plans to attend Ohio University.
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio works with donors and a volunteer advisory committee to award scholarships through an application process. The scholarships are supported by residents and others who want to expand educational opportunities in the region, according to the foundation.
The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is a nonprofit regional community foundation serving the 32 counties of Appalachian Ohio. It works with 15 affiliate foundations to encourage and support philanthropy throughout the region.
