ATHENS - Two suspects in a North Carolina homicide are dead Friday after a pursuit in Athens and Jackson counties, the Ohio State Highway Patrol said.
An automated license plate reader shortly before 8:20 a.m. Friday identified a black Mercedez-Benz registered to an owner wanted in a murder investigation in North Carolina, traveling west on U.S. 50 in Athens County, the Athens County Post of the Highway Patrol said in a release Friday evening.
Highway Patrol troopers and the Athens Police Department attempted a traffic stop, however, the driver did not stop and a pursuit followed that lasted about 20 minutes, the patrol said.
Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle on State Route 32 in Jackson County using a tire deflation device, the patrol said. The car swerved to avoid the device and struck a road sign before stopping near Hiram West Road where troopers heard two gunshots coming from the vehicle, the patrol said.
Assisting were the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, Jackson Police Department, Wellston Police Department and the Ohio Department of Transportation.
Two individuals, Carmyn Moore, 26, and Cory Armstrong, 29, were found in the vehicle, dead from gunshot wounds, the patrol said.
No other injuries occurred and no shots were fired by law enforcement, the patrol said.
According to the Gaston County, N.C., Police Department, two people were shot and died at the scene and two others were critically injured on Thursday at a residence in Gaston County. Moore and Armstrong also resided at the residence, according to the police department. Moore and Armstrong were charged with murder and attempted murder on Thursday in North Carolina, the police department said.
The incident remains under investigation by Gaston County Police.
