Veterans’ groups collect food and cash for Gospel Mission

MARIETTA – For nearly a decade, the Roy Trembly Annual Food Drive has collected thousands of dollars and hundreds of pounds of food to help the hunger needs of residents of the Mid-Ohio Valley.
Saturday the event in front of the Marietta Walmart collected $1,995 for the Gospel Mission of Marietta as well as more than a truck load of food that will go directly to the families served by the organization.
"We don't turn anyone away," said Jeff Waite, director of the mission, "Without the community's support we could not exist." The mission serves 350-450 people per week. "We go through a lot of food feeding that many people. It takes a lot of food," added Waite.
The Marine Corps Veterans Association, the Marine Corps League and AMVETS partnered with The Marietta Times to hold the event.
On Oct. 10, the Parkersburg version of the event will be held when the veteran groups partner with The Parkersburg News and Sentinel at 519 Juliana St. to raise money and collect food for Old Man Rivers and the Disabled American Veterans, Chapter 52.
