Washington County Commissioners meeting opens to community announcements

MARIETTA - Washington County Commissioners met Thursday and approved two budget transfer requests, and a letter of support for Marietta College's application to the Ohio Department of Development's Brownfield Remediation Program. Residents announced local events and Levi Reynolds shares his national ambassador status for Ohio 4-H shooting sports.
Levi Reynolds, 16 of Warren High School, announced he will represent 4-H shooting sports at the state level for Ohio and will serve as a national ambassador until 2029. He said this year he attended training in Eatonton, Ga. for a week with 30 other candidates for national ambassadors. Reynolds said that next year he will travel to Grand Island, Neb. and shoot pistol for Ohio's 4-H national team.
He said "I'm lucky to start the new year strong."
The Behavioral Health Board announced they will be partnering with Suicide Awareness Alliance for a Suicide Prevention walk on Sept. 19 at 9 a.m. at the Armory on Front Street. They will also hold their annual Recovery Walk the following Saturday, Sept. 26.
Sherry Ellem, administrative director of Washington County Health Department, announced free vision screenings through Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities on Wednesday from 2-4 p.m. at the Washington Health Department.
Roger Wright, of the Washington County Engineer's office, has been accessing damage from flash floods throughout the county and said residents should be cognizant of damage while traveling. He said the clean up of limbs and debris will begin in November.
Wright commented on last week’s discussion of Masonic Park Lane, stating that historically Washington County maintained the road because of its proximity to the county gravel pit; it is a private road. He said should the Commissioners agree to undertake the chip and seal repairs, he would put together an estimate for the repair costs.
In other business, the Commissioners approved two budget transfers; $160,295 for the County Home for budget stabilization, and $4,500 for the Washington County Sheriff's office for software expenses.
Commissioners also approved a letter of support for Marietta College's application to the Ohio Department of Development's Brownfield Remediation Program. The letter said the application represents an important opportunity to address brownfield concerns within the city of Marietta, Washington County, and support future investment within our community. Also, the Brownfield Remediation Program provides an opportunity to reposition challenging properties for future investment.
The next meeting will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at 9 a.m.
