Washington County Fair wraps up with livestock sale

MARIETTA - The 175th Washington County Fair wrapped up Tuesday afternoon including the livestock sale featuring the sale of 432 animals partnering with Farm to Table for the option for animals to be donated and the products donated to food pantries in Washington County.
4-H participant Zoey Hindel, with Salem Lower Homemakers and Lower Salem Boys, took home Grand Champion for market turkey this year and has participated in 4-H for three years. Hindel said she loves animals and birds and was very happy to win this year. She said while she knows her birds are raised to be sold she is glad to raise them and give them a good life.
FFA participant Sydney Skinner, with Fort Frye FFA, said the market teaches people a big life lesson and how much hard work goes into raising animals and pushes her to be better. Skinner said the buyers encourage the kids and help with the projects that often cost families quite a bit and the buyers help to offset the costs.
Senior Fairboard member Maddie Treadway said going into the 175th anniversary, the fairboard was very excited and has since received great feedback on the new rodeo company and the laser light show. While the rides at the fair did not go to plan overall the fair was a success.
Treadway said the market showcases the youth development and the work that is put into each project.
"These kids work so hard and learn so much with these projects," Treadway said.
This year, the Washington County Fair partnered with Farm to Table where buyers had the option to donate the animals purchased to farm to table that would be processed and dispersed to food pantries in the county. Treadway said the board thought the partnership would be a great opportunity. She said it was another opportunity for the fair and the kids to help within the community.
"It was a cool idea and we went for it," she said.
Treadway spoke on the change to the fairs date next year to July 12-17, she said it was to give more time between shows for spectators and exhibitors, especially exhibitors with multiple projects.
