PARKERSBURG - The 30th annual Walk for Life was held Oct. 18 at Parkersburg City Park.
The Walk for Life is an annual fundraising event for the Women's Care Center. Every year, local churches and organizations build teams, and each walker takes financial pledges from family and friends to sponsor their walk.
The goal for this year's walk was $140,000 for the operation of Women's Care Center, a Christ-centered medical clinic providing life-affirming choices for pregnancy and sexual health, according to a release from the organization. The services of pregnancy testing, ultrasound and STD testing and treatment are free and available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday at 3007 Dudley Ave., Parkersburg. The Grow Family Program is a mentoring, education and material assistance program at Women's Care Center for families for the first two years of their child's life. Women's Care Center has been in operation since 1991.
The weather on Walk Day brought around 250 participants to the event. Mark Eaton, president of the board of directors, welcomed everyone and read Micah 6:8.
Janetta Ross, executive director, gave a quick update on the ministry.
"We are proud to be advancing the mobile medical practice, which is now visiting Wirt, Ritchie, and Jackson County and, starting this week, will be in Marietta, OH. Women's Care Center will be expanding the facilities on Dudley Avenue by building an adjoining structure to the clinic to better serve our families in the Grow Family Program with a space three to four times the current size."
The two-mile walk kicked off with the traditional honoring of babies, born and unborn.
The financial tally raised on Walk Day was $106,000 for continued services at Women's Care Center. Amy Keiser, assistant director, announced the winning teams and honored all the walkers who raised $1,000 or more. Boaz Baptist Church was the gold team, raising $14,990, and Bethel Baptist was honored as the silver team, raising $6,885. Donations and pledge forms can still be dropped off at Women's Care Center or mailed to P.O. Box 4765, Parkersburg, WV 26104.
