NEW MATATMORAS - On Tuesday, an affidavit of facts was released with details of an incident resulting in the death of Conard Mace, 89, and wounding of Sandra Mace, 77, in Grandview Township on Sunday.

Marietta resident Baxter Grimes, 50, has been charged with multiple crimes, including murder, in the incident.

In the affidavit, Washington County Sheriff’s Detective Sgt. Robert McKee states that an individual related to the victims reported at approximately 12:33 a.m. Sunday that they’d been shot at their residence by an individual who fled the area.

The victims were ultimately transported to a hospital in Columbus, and according to McKee, at the time of his statement Sandra was in stable condition, and Conard had died as a result of his gunshot wound.

Officers were able to identify Grimes as a person of interest. Following a manhunt, Grimes was found at approximately 8:11 a.m. in New Matamoras. He was taken into custody after attempting to flee from law enforcement.

During the investigation, detectives spoke with a separate resident of Grandview Township who alleged Grimes had come to his home prior to the home invasion and stole a handgun.

During McKee's interview with Grimes, he reportedly said he had stolen the handgun and intended to use the firearm to threaten the victims of the home invasion so he could steal their property. He admitted to shooting Sandra when she was opening the door, then entering the residence and shooting Conard. He then ransacked the residence and "stole ‘Percocets,’ jewelry, and silver cutlery from the elderly couple," according to McKee's statement.

According to the statement, Grimes admitted he had gone to the Mace residence with a bag of clothes and shoes which he later changed into after fleeing from the scene. He admitted he had discarded the items used or stolen during the offense in different areas of the Grandview/Liberty Township areas.
