Edwards, Riffle to be featured at the Art Center

PARKERSBURG - Two artists from West Virginia will be featured in Art After Hours from 5-7 p.m. Friday at the Parkersburg Art Center.

The evening of art, appetizers, extended gift shop hours and a cash bar will feature the opening reception for "Progressions: Works by Harold Edwards & David Riffle" and showcase the work of two long-time friends and artists.

"Both artists have deep West Virginia roots and distinctive approaches to their work, making this a great opportunity to see two very different artistic perspectives in one exhibit," Abby Hayhurst, artistic director of the Art Center, said. "This exhibit has a very short run so make plans to visit by Nov. 7."

A native West Virginian, Harold Edwards graduated from West Virginia State College and the Marshall University Graduate College and taught public school for nearly 40 years. He describes his work through an explosion of systematic energy, using the Fibonacci sequence, a mathematical pattern based on rhythmic progression, to guide his use of color and design.

The result is art combining structure, movement and bold visual patterns.

David Riffle, born in Gassaway in Braxton County, draws inspiration from West Virginia’s landscapes, wildlife, architecture and way of life. Working in mixed media, he brings together familiar Appalachian imagery, including mountains, water, catfish and great blue herons with unexpected details and imaginative settings.

His work reflects a connection to the state and an eye for finding creative possibilities in the world around him.

Riffle’s resourcefulness also extends beyond his art. He built a home with his daughter atop Tyler Mountain in Kanawha County, using mostly recycled materials and his self-taught carpentry skills.

"Art After Hours is a great way to start your Friday evening. Stop by before heading to the symphony or dinner, or join us for a little creativity from 5-7 p.m. and still make it home in time for 'Jeopardy,'" Art Center Managing Director Jessie Siefert said. "All are welcome."

Admission to Art After Hours is free. Donations to support future exhibitions will be appreciated.

The galleries are open during Art Center regular hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday and at no cost thanks to the admission sponsorship of WVU Medicine Camden Clark Medical Center.
