BEVERLY - Fort Frye High School senior Grady Hesson, a manufacturing industry partner and a student entrepreneurship program earned regional honors during the Ohio School Boards Association's southeast region fall conference Sept. 24.

The awards recognized student achievement, support for career and technical education, and a program that gives students experience producing custom goods, according to a news release.

Hesson received the region's outstanding male student award. He has a 4.0 grade-point average, is earning college credits and competes in three sports for the Cadets.

A captain of the football team, Hesson also participates in National Honor Society, SAVE, Cadets for a Cause and student council. His activities include community service and involvement in his church, according to the release.

The Appalachian Ohio Manufacturing Coalition received the outstanding community business partner award for its support of career and technical education at Fort Frye.

The coalition has provided training for teachers and students and donated equipment, resources and funding to support learning in manufacturing, engineering and robotics.

Fort Frye High School Principal Andy Schob said the partnership has helped the school develop career pathways that prepare students for jobs needed in the region.

Career education teacher Jarvis Huck and The Forge received the region's exemplary new student program award.

Huck created The Forge as an in-school laser-production enterprise where students learn to use manufacturing tools and equipment to make custom goods while gaining experience in entrepreneurship.

"Jarvis has been a wonderful addition to the Fort Frye team, and we are able to offer our students many career tech opportunities because of his talents," Superintendent Stephanie Starcher said in the release.

The Ohio School Boards Association provides advocacy and professional services for public school systems and their boards of education. Its regions annually recognize students, staff, programs and community partners.
