MARIETTA - At one point hoped to be finished prior to this year's Ohio River Sternwheel Festival, an ongoing sewer line replacement project will last at least another week.
Work that has closed the intersection at Front and Greene streets since Sept. 21 was originally planned to be done before the festival that ran from Sept. 11-13. But city Public Utilities Director Ryan Boley said a delay in getting equipment for the manhole replacement caused officials to hold off until after the festivities centered on the Ohio River Levee next to the intersection were finished.
Due to complications that arose as contractor Shelly and Sands dug down to reach the pipe 20 feet below the surface, the work will now continue until at least Monday, Oct. 12.
"There was a 10-foot section of it wrapped in about two feet of concrete that they had to jackhammer through," Boley said.
Another challenge is the concrete for the crosswalk being installed at the intersection must cure for five days before it can be driven over, he said.
Although people cannot turn right onto Front Street from Greene at the intersection, the 100 block is still accessible via Butler Street, Boley said.
He asked for people's patience as workers try to get the project completed.
"These sewers are old, and we're trying to get as many of them dealt with as we can," Boley said.
