MARIETTA – The Hearts & Hands 4 Paws 5K was held Sunday in Marietta to raise money to pay veterinarian service expenses for spay and neutering efforts in the area. Around 200 people, many with their pets, participated in the 5K run/walk starting at Muskingum Park, down Front Street to the boat ramp and back on the Marietta River Trail bike trail, said organizer Cynthia Brock. She estimated they had around 50 pets participating. The event was also put on by the River City Runners & Walkers Club.

Hearts and Hands 4 Paws is a non-profit that provides financial assistance and resources to support low-income individuals living in the Mid-Ohio Valley counties.

The event is raising money to help people pay for veterinarian services, spay, neutering and other vet services.

“Awareness of spay and neutering efforts,” Brock said. “Our shelters are overrun with animals that need good homes.

“The shelters receive surrendered pets. This organization helps people care for their animals and keep them at home so they don’t have to be surrendered. We are trying to keep animals in their home and out of the shelters.”
