NEW MATAMORAS - An elderly Grandview Township resident died after being shot during a home invasion, the Washington County Sheriff's Office announced Monday.
According to a release from the sheriff's office, deputies responded at 12:33 a.m. Sunday to a 911 call and found two people had been shot.
The victims were rushed to a local hospital where they were stabilized, and then transported to a hospital in Columbus, the release says. One of the victims later died as a result of a gunshot wound; the status of the other victim was not specified.
The release did not identify the victims.
Deputies and detectives processed the scene and developed Baxter L. Grimes, 50, of Marietta as a suspect, the release says. During the investigation, they learned he had allegedly burglarized another residence in the New Matamoras area earlier in the evening and stolen a firearm.
A manhunt was initiated and an Everbridge message was sent to the community, resulting in the suspect being sighted, the release says. He was taken into custody by detectives at 2:03 p.m. Sunday after a brief foot pursuit, it says.
Grimes was arrested on first-degree felony charges of aggravated murder, attempting to commit an offense (murder) and aggravated burglary; two second-degree felony counts of felonious assault and a second-degree felony count of theft of a firearm; four third-degree felony counts of tampering with evidence; and one fifth-degree felony count of burglary.
Grimes is being held without bond at the Washington County Jail.
The case remains under investigation. The sheriff’s office asks anyone with further information to contact the office at 740-376-7070, ext 0.
