Marietta museums awarded over $3 million for restoration and renovations

MARIETTA - On Monday State Rep. Kevin Ritter, R-Marietta, shared that the Ohio Controlling Board approved funding for projects in Athens and Washington counties, including $1,825,000 to restore the Ohio River Museum and $2,884,000 for renovations of the Campus Martius Museum, according to a news release from his office.

"The Ohio River Museum and Campus Martius Museum protect and illuminate important aspects of our local history and legacy on the state," Ritter said in the release, "I'm glad to see restoration efforts move forward with this funding.”

Construction of the new Ohio River Museum began in April 2025, with plans to reopen in 2027.

Phase one will be the completion of the new facility, which will consist of the Washington County local history and genealogy archive, a lobby, community event space and a larger parking lot. The building will 29,000 square feet including a lower level and outdoor decks.

Phase two includes the completion of the exhibit hall of the museum along with final landscaping touches.

Once phase two is complete, all of the exhibits from the older building will be transferred and the remainder of the old building will be torn down.

Information on the renovations for the Campus Martius Museum were not immediately available.

In Athens County, Hocking Technical College will receive $425,300 to make renovations to an existing roof. According to the release, the renovations will be essential to the school's success and to continue to educate students.
