PARKERSBURG - Leavitt Funeral Services Crematory is again participating in Wreaths Across America, a nationwide program to honor veterans.
This year's event will be Dec. 19 when remembrance wreaths will be placed on the graves of veterans throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley. It is a heartfelt tribute to those who served the country, Jon Leavitt said.
“What began as a simple gesture of gratitude has grown into a powerful national movement that brings generations together to honor the men and women who have served our country,” said Leavitt, a fifth-generation owner and funeral director. “We are proud to have been part of this meaningful tradition since 2007 and to continue providing our community with an opportunity to personally remember and honor our local veterans.”
Wreaths Across America encompasses more than 6,000 participating locations around the nation and involves volunteers, families, businesses and community organizations in an expression of remembrance and appreciation.
“Our goal is to encourage as many individuals, families, and businesses throughout the Mid-Ohio Valley as possible to participate,” Leavitt said. “Each wreath represents more than a tribute. It is a personal expression of gratitude and a reminder that the service and sacrifices of our veterans will never be forgotten.”
Wreath sponsorships are now being accepted for $17 each. Individuals and businesses may sponsor one or more wreaths to be placed on veterans’ graves at participating local cemeteries. Sponsors may also arrange to pick up their wreaths at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg and personally place them on the graves of veterans they wish to honor.
Sponsors choosing pickup will be notified when wreaths are available.
“We are especially grateful to the many individuals and businesses who have supported this program throughout the years,” Stephen Leavitt, also a fifth-generation owner and funeral director, said. “Their generosity and commitment make it possible for our community to come together each December and pay tribute to the heroes who have given so much for our freedom.”
Beyond honoring individual veterans, wreath sponsorships also support Wreaths Across America’s broader mission. Since 2007, the organization has given more than $32 million to local nonprofit organizations, veterans’ groups, scouting troops and civic organizations through its Sponsorship Group Program.
The deadline to sponsor a wreath through Leavitt is Nov. 25.
