10 years in prison for home invasion
A Beallsville man who participated in a summer home invasion with other area residents was sentenced to 10 years in prison Thursday in Washington County Common Pleas Court.
Austin Wallace, 29, of 53349 Clover Ridge Road, was sentenced by Common Pleas Judge Randall Burnworth on one first-degree felony count of aggravated robbery, one first-degree felony count of kidnapping and one first-degree felony count of aggravated burglary.
The sentence, which was identical to the one handed down to a co-defendant in the case, included a 10-year prison sentence for each of the three charges.
“These will all run concurrently for a total of 10 years,” Burnworth said. “You’ll be on post-release control for a period of five years after that.”
In early September, secret indictments were returned by a Washington County Grand Jury against five people connected to the July home invasion in Vincent.
According to reports, Wallace, along with Nathan Williams, of Marietta, were accused of conducting the robbery and assault and Brandon Robinson, of Vincent, acted as their driver.
Wallace and Williams forcibly entered the home of James Brookover, of 85 Lane Road, Vincent, and assaulted him in front of his son before binding him with duct tape, ransacking the home and removing $1,000 in cash, a large TV and a cellphone.
The men were armed with a rifle and a sledgehammer, and Brookover suffered from multiple lacerations and other injuries. The child was not harmed.
Keely Jaeger and Jacinda Hutson, both of Marietta, were arrested for providing false alibis for the men involved.
For their roles committing the robbery, both Williams and Wallace each pleaded guilty to the three counts in exchange for other charges to be dropped.
“They both got the same sentence of 10 years,” said Washington County interim Prosecutor Kevin Rings. “And Robinson is up for trial soon.”
Robinson’s case is going to trial in April. Hutson and Jaeger were both charged and given jail time for obstruction charges.
“We have four out of the five involved finished up, so now we just have Robinson left,” Rings said.
Restitution is expected to be ordered in the case. Brookover knew the suspects involved and the burglary connected was reported to have been drug-related.
“There’s need for a hearing on restitution, because that has not been determined yet,” Burnworth said.
Wallace received 190 days of credit for time already spent in jail.
