BREAKING: Bridge company president resigns

Swaney

A longtime spokesperson for the Historic Harmar Bridge Company Chuck Swaney has resigned from the presidency of the board of directors for the private organization that owns the Historic Harmar Bridge in Marietta.

“It is time for me to step aside and let new leadership take the helm,” he shared in a resignation letter today to members of the board, its subcommittees and the press.

The abandoned railroad bridge with more than a century of cumulative history was closed to pedestrian traffic by the bridge company on March 1, 2020, with the goals of injury prevention, pedestrian safety and hope for restoration/renovation following analyses of the piers, dead loads and cost options to reconnect east with west along the Butler-Maple streets’ corridor in the revitalization district of Marietta.

Chairman of the Board Larry Sloter said he had met with Swaney at the time the resignation was submitted.
