B&G Club teen coordinator dies

The Boys and Girls Club of Washington County will remain closed for the remainder of this week following the sudden death of a staff member Monday evening.

Executive Director Rebecca Johnson confirmed the death of Garrett Scott, 25, of Marietta, on Tuesday noting Scott was not only the son of the club’s program coordinator Angela Scott, but also an asset to the club team in his own right.

“Our focus this week is supporting the youth while giving respectful space to the family,” she said. “He was our teen coordinator and just always up for any adventure, any fun trip with teens he and I were the first to jump at going.”

Garrett Scott was a frequent sight not only within the Marietta club, but also across the county throughout the last year delivering food to club families and those enrolled in the GoPacks program throughout coronavirus shutdowns.

He was also a certified emergency medical technician and a volunteer with the Oak Grove Volunteer Fire and EMS squad. The volunteer unit changed its social media to reflect Scott’s death with a black band over the badge of the department in its profile picture.

He was also known for the beats behind local musician Jake Binegar who announced via social media that his planned performances for Friday and Saturday have been canceled.

“Our love for music caused our paths to cross, but our friendship kept us together,” wrote Binegar. “Loud Saturday nights jamming out in a country band and early Sunday mornings leading worship will never be the same.”

Johnson also noted Scott’s passion for music crossing over into the club and his passion for improving teen lives.

“He has been spearheading the push for a music studio here and (separately) for the money sense and money matters program,” she explained. “He wanted kids to be ready to move into adulthood.”

Johnson said both the Marietta and Belpre clubs are to be closed today with plans to reopen Monday.
