Downtown Marietta is preparing for November First Friday, on Nov. 4, and the evening's theme is Hometown Heroes. Businesses and organizations will be honoring heroes of all types, from first responders and health care workers to military personnel and teachers.
The event is sponsored by Memorial Health Systems, and representatives will have a booth on the Armory Lawn. The Toys for Tots train will also be at the Armory, collecting toys to help provide Christmas joy to underprivileged children. The Salvation Army will be on hand to "Recycle the Cheer", collecting unwanted holiday decor for those who cannot otherwise afford decorations. Artsbridge, United Way, Veritas Academy, Oakgrove Christian School and Legacy Real Estate will all be on the Armory Lawn to provide kids' activities and promotions.
Some businesses will offer our Hometown Heroes (first responders, Law enforcement, health care, teachers, etc.) many reasons to shop downtown, including 10% discount at American Flag and Poles, 20% at Threadz Boutique, 10% at Wit and Whimzy, 20% at Marietta Wine Cellars (excluding alcohol) and 10% at Over the Moon Pub and Pizza. Sugar Maple Boutique will offer 15% off your entire purchase. American Flags and Poles will also have author Kenneth Brown and his new book, and Grace's Cakes with sweet treats. At Just a Jar, Paper Circle will be on site for paper making and origami demonstrations. Andy's Toy Chest will be hosting Crafting Like a Mother and Monster Horde with his vinyl records.
Customers can play Lucky Duck at Tabletop Puzzles and Games for a chance to win up to 50% off a purchase, and can also search in other businesses for one of two Dino eggs containing a $50 gift certificate. MOVE (Mid-Ohio Valley Employment) will have a drawing for a complete Thanksgiving dinner and offer a free job to anyone who completes an application. Visitors will find plenty of food and drink specials for the evening, including two $5 draft specials at The Galley.
At Over the Moon Pizza and Pub, pepperoni or cheese slices will be $2 and a special "Buzz Aldrin" drink will be $3; Tyler Brown will be performing his music from 8-11 p.m. Jeremiah's Coffee House will be hosting musicians Evan Cunningham and Hollyn Reed and Lolly's Vintage Closet will be set up with fun vintage wares. All their mugs will be on sale 2 for $20.
Downtown First Friday events are coordinated by Marietta Main Street and take place the first Friday of every month from 5-9 p.m. January through December. Highlights of these events include shops open late, restaurant specials, local artists and musicians, area organizations and various happenings tied into the theme of the First Friday. Each First Friday is a celebration of our local community and an opportunity for locals, tourists and area groups to show their support for our town, have fun and enjoy the beauty of vibrant, historic downtown Marietta!
