LOWELL — A writer from Lowell has published a lengthy history on the village of Lowell.

“Lowell, Ohio: History and Memories” is the second book by Ian Hamilton, 29.

Hamilton starts at the beginning of the town located on the Muskingum River.

He has included photographs and among the topics are agriculture, organizations, schools, churches, transportation, disasters and personalities.

“From the beginning of Lowell to the present day,” Hamilton said through his father, Shawn.

Hamilton has Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, Shawn said. That by itself would make writing the history an accomplishment.

Personalities included in the history book include:

¯ The renown longrifle maker Cecil Brooks. His work was given by the NRA as presentation rifles, of which the late actor Charlton Heston was a recipient.

¯ College and WNBA coach Dan Hughes. He coached the Seattle Storm and San Antonio Stars.

¯ Mary Reed, a missionary who worked with lepers. Reed herself was diagnosed with leprosy.

¯ Gen. Don Carlos Buell, who did not defeat an outnumbered army of Confederates at the key Battle of Perryville, Ky. He was relieved of command.

¯ World War II fighter pilot Lt. Roger Dyar, who was a test pilot on the new P-47 Thunderbolt. After a test mission, the Army said Dyar and another pilot, experiencing frozen controls during a high-speed dive, broke the sound barrier. They did not.

“It was propaganda more than anything else,” Hamilton said.

Dyar was killed in June 1943.

Another item is about a steel ball crashing to earth on Sept. 7, 1974, on the Ollie Wagner farm near Lowell.

The Wagners were visited by Air Force officers who said they were trying to determine the country of origin.

“In October 1974, Howard Wagner, son of Ollie Wagner, told reporters that the ball was no longer at the farm, but refused to reveal its location,” the history book said.

“U.S. Air Force personnel said that they were not aware that the ball had been moved, but said as far as they were concerned, ‘it is a dead issue,'” the book said. “The USAF spokesman added, ‘The Man apparently thinks it is valuable, but it is worthless.”

Hamilton’s first book was “Historic Images of Lowell, Ohio,” published in 2020.

Veterans and military history related to Lowell will be the subject of a third book, he said.

“Lowell, Ohio: History and Memories” is available by emailing ihamilton93@mail.com or by calling 740-896-3179. The cost for a hardback is $50 and a softback is $40. Shipping is $7.

The book, published by Lulu Publishing, is 700 pages.

“I would have liked to have done more, but the publisher had a limitation on pages,” Hamilton said.
