Flag raisings, dinner to mark Marietta’s birthday
The Marietta Chapter Sons of the American Revolution Color Guard will conduct a flag raising ceremony at the Museum of the Northwest Territory — Campus Martius at 10 a.m. Friday in celebration of Marietta’s founding on April 7, 1788.
Historian Bill Reynolds will speak about the beginnings of the Northwest Territory and early pioneers of note.
The museum at 601 Second St. is located on the site of the 1788 Fortress Campus Martius, and the home of General Rufus Putnam is on its original foundation inside the museum. The museum also houses the original Ohio Land Office
The American flag and the flags of each state of the Northwest Territory are donated each year by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta.
There also will be a flag raising ceremony to mark Marietta’s 235th anniversary of its founding at 7 a.m. Friday at the Start Westward Memorial in Muskingum Park, organized by the Kiwanis Club of Marietta. The Marine Corps League Detachment 1436 will perform the flag raising. City Mayor Josh Schlicher and Kiwanis Club president John Halliday will speak.
In addition, the Washington County Historical Society will hold a Pioneer Day Dinner for members and guests at American Legion Post 64 that evening.
